Do Evil Twins Have a Right to Life?

The story of the "evil twin" removed from a woman's brain was mentioned in the Night Owl thread, and in the comments one reader made a (seemingly) humorous remark comparing this to abortion.

However, I would suggest that this is not really a joke. Depending on the exact wording, the removal of a teratoma actually could violate any future laws or amendments banning abortion. The teratoma removed in this case had developed bones, teeth, and hair -- just the sort of characteristics that abortion foes like to cite as evidence that a fetus is a person.

Worse yet, while bans on abortion sometimes include provisions allowing the procedure if the "life of the mother is endangered," such exemptions would technically not apply in the case of a teratoma, since the person endangered is actually a sibling.

It's not hard to imagine doctors refusing to remove an "evil twin" because they fear being charged with murder. I'm sure it's nice to live in Far Right World, where everything is simple and in black and white. Unfortunately, it's not the real world in which most of us live.
